The local activities will be involving young people in the local communities directly to the project activities and make them to raise their voices concerning to the issues that they define important. In addition to that, we expect these activities will promote their active involvement to the process. To do so, we have identified the preparation process as important for making the people engage fully.

Preparation

The photo walk activities are implemented targeting the young people with fewer opportunities. These activities will take place 4 times for engaging young people to try out the material developed within this project in their local context and make them work with their local communities and make the life of people visible by using the tool of photography. In this perspective, there are two segments of the local activities. Even we use the photovoice methodology and explained it above, the participants are as well as expected to interact with each other and work on the issues that they see important in their own communities and make these issues visible.

We want to identify the issues that are present in our communities. Prior to go to the fieldwork, our main aim is to understand the issues of the young people with fewer opportunities and answer the following questions in our country context :

  • What are the issues in your community as a young people with fewer opportunity?
  • What does the inclusion mean to you?
  • What are the inequalities in our communities?
  • How do you imagine more inclusive environment in your community?

These are sample guiding questions to formulate the research question prior to the start of the photo voice activity by the youth worker. However, it can be totally different though, we have to aim the issue of inclusivity and how to be more inclusive within our photography and visual storytelling processes.

  1. Chose the venue : As our aim is to promote the issues which are invisible of left out in our communities, we have to choose the venue wisely prior to the implementation of the photo voice activities. Therefore, be wise while choosing the place to do the field work.
  • Tailor the content : If none of your participants do not have any professional camera or any device to edit the photos, try to adopt your content to your participants. In example, explaining for a longer period of time how to tackle with the aperture, shutter speed or ISO, put more emphasis on the composition creation. So adjust your content, however you see fit to interests of participants and your audience.
  • Prepare your materials : You can download the training resource pack from the link below that we have developed. These materials are accessible friendly ( with captions of images ) and can be distributed in PDF format to the participants to reduce the paper waste during the activities.
  • Prepare your training room : Before the implementation it is important to have the necessary material that might be needed in the room that you plan to use.
  • Overhead Projector & Projection Screen (or light-coloured, blank wall)
  • Computers
  • Flipchart ( If possible to use only Board )
  • Tape
  • Pens /Pencils/Markers
  • Paper
  • Handouts as PDF

These are not the exhaustive list of materials but to listed as a guiding list of materials. That’s why be sure that you have your own list of materials and you are prepared before the training activity.

Thus, we have provided KeyNote Presentations, PPTs and PDFs for you to be able to reuse, adjust and prepare for your target groups.

Prepare as well as the participant list and consent forms that are within the Resource Pack to document for the funding organizations as well as receive confirmation of the usage of materials that are developed by the participants to be used later on by them.

DON’T FORGET :
  • All the methods are implementable with the groups sized 20-30 people. Over 30 people, these methods should be implemented by dividing to group several small groups.
  • You can implement the activities with any type of camera from smartphone to compact cameras, no need of fancy equipment.
  • Check the sustainability & accessibility list before doing something to ensure that the event is sustainable and accessible for everyone.
  • You have all the materials for the implementation of the local activity and you have translated versions of the presentations to tackle with the lack of language ability of your target group.
